Volatile organic compound emissions from solvent- and water-borne coatings – compositional differences and tracer compound identifications

چکیده

Abstract. The emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from chemical products (VCPs) – specifically personal care products, cleaning agents, coatings, adhesives, and pesticides are emerging as the largest source petroleum-derived carbon in US cities. Previous work has shown that ambient concentration markers for most VCP categories correlates strongly with population density, except VOCs predominantly originating solvent- water-borne coatings (e.g., parachlorobenzotrifluoride (PCBTF) Texanol®, respectively). Instead, these enhancements were dominated by distinct emission events likely driven industrial usage patterns, such construction activity. In this work, headspace a variety coating was analyzed using proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) gas chromatography (GC) preseparation front end to identify composition differences various types paints, primers, sealers, stains). Evaporation experiments several showed high initial VOC rates, length experiments, majority emitted during first few hours following application. percentage measured (<1 % 83 %) mirrored content reported manufacturer (<5 550 g L?1). Ambient laboratory measurements, trends, ingredients compiled architectural surveys show both PCBTF Texanol account ?10 total ingredient sales and, therefore, can be useful tracers coatings.

Determination of volatile organic compound emissions and ozone formation from spraying solvent-based pesticides.

Large-scale agricultural activities have come under scrutiny for possible contributions to the emission of ozone precursors. The San Joaquin Valley (SJV) of California is an area with intense agricultural activity that exceeds the federal ozone standards for more than 30 to 40 d yr(-1) and the more stringent state standards for more than 100 d yr(-1). Pesticides are used widely in both agricult...

Biogenic volatile organic compound emissions from vegetation fires

The aim of this paper was to provide an overview of the current state of the art on research into the emission of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) from vegetation fires. Significant amounts of VOCs are emitted from vegetation fires, including several reactive compounds, the majority belonging to the isoprenoid family, which rapidly disappear in the plume to yield pollutants such as s...

Biogenic volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from forests in Finland

We present model estimates of biogenic volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from the forests in Finland. The emissions were calculated for the years 1995–1997 using the measured isoprene and monoterpene emission factors of boreal tree species together with detailed satellite land cover information and meteorological data. The three-year average emission is 319 kilotonnes per annum, which i...

Differences between measured and reported volatile organic compound emissions from oil sands facilities in Alberta, Canada.

Large-scale oil production from oil sands deposits in Alberta, Canada has raised concerns about environmental impacts, such as the magnitude of air pollution emissions. This paper reports compound emission rates (E) for 69-89 nonbiogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for each of four surface mining facilities, determined with a top-down approach using aircraft measurements in the summer of ...
